On Sept. 17, Apple came out with the iOS 8 update for iPhone. Although the new features seem well-thought-out, the overall update is a waste of storage and is full of useless new quirks.

The update includes new additions to the camera, messaging and the notification bar.

A timer has been added to both the front and back cameras which is helpful, but the addition of a “deleted pictures” folder is unnecessary. When deleting a picture from the camera roll, the picture is put into a “deleted picture” folder where it will stay for a duration of approximately 30 days before it is permanently deleted. Pictures that are deleted are to be done on purpose, so moving them into another folder is an unwanted feature.

The messaging app now comes equipped with an option to send voice recordings or locations. While this feature would be helpful, it is not necessary when typing a few words is simple and copying and pasting is two clicks away for locations. Apple also created a way for the phone to predict what will be typed next.

The worst part of all is the glitchy notification bar. There is an option to turn on the read receipts in settings. Read receipts are a way for the text recipient to know that you have read their message by having the time the text was read appear on their screen. Although multiple teenagers would use the notification bar as a way to read texts without showing that they read them, the new update has made the viewing in the notification bar count as reading texts. Another problem with the notification bar is the fact that when an alert comes down, it does not go away until it is clicked on.

The update is not worth the five gigabytes of storage. Expectations were too high due to rumors such as new emojis. Proof of the pointless update is evident in the fact that a week later Apple introduced the iOS 8.2 update which tried to correct the many glitches in the first edition.

Overall iOS 8 had a cool premise but poor execution.
