Multiplying Members
Mu Alpha Theta has largest student count yet
Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society, has reached a record-breaking amount of members this year.
The club, founded in 1957 at the University of Oklahoma, provides a way for schools to encourage students who enjoy mathematics.
“I want them to learn to appreciate the beauty of mathematics,” club sponsor and teacher Ashleyanne Thornhill said. “I want them to learn how it relates to the real world.”
Mu Alpha Theta now has over 300 members who tutor students that are in need of assistance with math.
“I plan to utilize the big membership by honing in on volunteer opportunities,” secretary Samiya Kahn said. “We also hope to help those at feeder schools.”
Now that the club has taken off, the officers and sponsor hope that word will spread around school about how fun the club is.
“I think that the club will be more well-known now,” Thornhill said. “It will show how much fun math can really be.”
New members join the club for better opportunities.
“I hope to gain more experience in assisting others and to better myself in math by learning new things along the way,” junior Scarlett Killeen said.
A plethora of new members does not seem to worry faculty, officers or other members.
“I’m not really that overwhelmed,” Kahn said. “I enjoy collaborating with the other officers and seeing our hard work pay off.”
Along with tutoring students, members of the honor society compete in conventions and could even win awards and scholarships. Mu Alpha Theta has created a system of support throughout its many branches.
“With a larger membership that means there are more people I can go to for help if I need it,” Killeen said. “It’s a wonderful support system.”
