Going into the ‘22-23 season, Plano West Varsity Girls Basketball has high hopes for the upcoming year.

Coming off a strong win Tuesday, November 15th  against Richardson, the Lady Wolves currently have a 2-3 record and are preparing for the Ft. Worth Cowtown Classic in December. With many returning players, senior Sophia Wang shared her thoughts on the team’s strengths going forward into the season.

“I think our biggest strength is definitely our team chemistry,” said Wang. “We are always there for each other both on and off the court, striving to pick each other up and improve through the hardships we experience together as a team.”

Although the team roster has stayed relatively the same, one significant change for the Lady Wolves is the addition of Head Coach Matthew Parkman. With previous experience at Independence High School, the varsity team looks to Parkman to lead them to a successful season.

“Last year we faced a lot of adversity as a team and we have grown together, so with our new head coach, I think we are on the right track and are going to be really good this year,” said Ava Brezovsky, senior.

With district play starting December 7th, the girls basketball team will use these next few weeks to raise areas of their game. Victoria Hathaway, senior, mentioned one focus the team has and is working to improve on.

“Occasionally, we take shots that aren’t the best – sometimes contested and other times simply bad shots,” said Hathaway. “We know how that can put us in close situations, so we are working on making the ‘one-more’ pass in order to prevent the bad shot in the first place.”

While continuing to finish preseason strong, the Lady Wolves are striving for a successful upcoming season.

“Our hope for the rest of the season is to make it to playoffs for the first time in many years,” said Brezovsky. “We have been practicing hard all summer and are preparing for district to start in a few weeks. So with continued hard work, hopefully that happens.”
