Plano West Swim Team began the year with an event competing against Plano Senior and Allen High School in Allen. Plano West won the event strongly by beating the two schools by a landslide.

In an event of a total 53 competitors and given three sets of heats for every competition, the event held lots of competition to participate in but the main focus for Plano West were Medley’s & Individual Makes.

Jose Romero, junior, is a swimmer for the varsity team who participated in the event in both Medleys and Individuals. Romero has big goals following the season.

“This year, I hope to be able to qualify for state and win the 100 fly (butterfly) and 50 free (freestyle) and 100 freestyle,” said Romero.

Romero excelled in both medley’s and individuals, achieving both first in individual and a part of the Medley along with Jerry Wang, freshmen, Pablo Romero, sophomore, Logan Choi senior in the 4×100 Freestyle, 4×50 Freestyle and 4×50 Medley.

“We did a lot better than we thought we were gonna do, beating the Varsity and JV boys on the other teams and the morale definitely increased after this meet and we’re very excited for our next meet,” said Romero.

Even though swimming is a competitive sport with a tense atmosphere, Romero emphasized the importance of maintaining sportsmanship.

“We definitely expected us to have a positive attitude, which we absolutely nailed. We expected to have good sportsmanship with each other and with the other teams. I’m very happy to say that we nailed both those aspects,” said Romero.

The events are won by total points given to performers in points they earn for placements in the relays and races. Plano West dominated the event with a score of 535 points in total.
