The State Fair of Texas is Back Up and Running

The smell of fried food, that old Ferris wheel turning once again, crowds upon crowds arriving greeted by the smiling face of Big Tex and his shiny new size 96 Lucchese boots. All signs that it is that time of year again: The State Fair. Grab your ticket and get ready to explore all the State Fair has to offer.

Head on over to Tower Building Food Court and eat your weight in fried food. Wondering what some of the best tasty treats are? Look no further. Here is the list of the 2019 State Fair food winners.

Best Taste- Savory: Ruth’s Stuffed Fried Taco Cone, a taco shell in the shape of an ice cream cone filled with a mix of black beans and cilantro rice, topped with pico de gallo, queso fresco, and homemade salsa verde. Enjoy this easily transportable savory snack as you explore the rest of the State Fair.

Best Taste- Sweet: Big Red Chicken Bread, a donut covered in mouth-watering Big Red flavored frosting with a chicken wing settle right in the middle. sporting a pair of sunglasses.

Most Creative: Fla’mango Tango a mango fried twist with citrus glaze drizzle topped with whipped cream and a little flamingo sticking up- served alongside a strawberry mango sorbet.

If you don’t like the sound of those (But really, who does not love the sound of them?) then try some of the finalists.

  • Fernie’s Fried Burnt End Burrito
  • Southern Fried Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo Ball
  • Texas Cream Corn Casserole Fritters

Sweet Finalist:

  • Peanut Butter Cup Snookie
  • Quick Fried Black Gold Truffles
  • Deep-Fried Bayou Fruit Bites


After enjoying some food, make sure to see some of the daily events.

  • Mattress Firm Illumination Sensation: A nightly firework show over the reflecting pools that includes lively music and performances.
  • TX Stunt Jam at The Xtreme Sports Zone: Get ready for an Xtreme show filled with BMX, scooter and skateboard stunts, featuring a course filled with everything from loops to half pipes.
  • Splashdance: A show of acrobats and dancers performing on a stage with the Esplanade Fountain.
  • Contain Yourself(ie): Stroll down a path lined with 10 painted shipping containers painted by various artists around Texas.
  • Also make sure to explore the Midway, and enjoy all the rides and games available. Tickets can be purchased for these rides at various booths for $0.50 each. Most rides cost about 10-12 coupons.

Also, make sure to go to the Musical Events on the Chevrolet Main Stage.

Here are some tips and tricks to make your State Fair trip easier.

  • To avoid walking a mile from the parking lot and save gas, take the green line Dart rail. It stops right in front of the fair and cost $6.

Go on discount days:

  • If you have lost your school fair ticket, on Tuesdays bring a Dr.Pepper can at any time and get half off. Or any day after 5 p.m., bring a Dr.Pepper can and enjoy half off tickets as well.
  • Also, enjoy half-off rides every Tuesday.
