Spider-Man Leaves the MCU Causing a Stir

Elizabeth Secor, Staff Writer

The internet is buzzing with the news that Spider-Man is swinging away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Avengers Endgame painted the picture of Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man being the next heads of the Marvel phase era. Spider-Man Far From Home left us with the idea that Spider-Man would be filling in the shoes of the great hero Iron Man himself. Now after recent reports it looks like neither of those will be happening. Spider-Man is being pulled from the MCU and it is all Sony’s fault.

On Aug. 13, news broke out that Disney Marvel had sought to rewrite their contract with Sony. The contract would have given them 50/50 on the earnings of the Spider-Man movies and also let them keep the profit from Spider-Man merchandising. Marvel also offered to split the cost of filming 50/50 and Sony would still be able to use Marvel movie director Kevin Feige. Sony declined and would not come back with a counter offer. With both studios pointing fingers at the other, the future of Marvel movies without Spider-Man and the future of Spider-Man without the MCU is unclear. Sony is seeing the future positively after the success of Into The Spider Verse and Venom. Although considering Spider-Man Far From Home was Sony’s highest grossing movie of all time, thanks to the directing of Kevin Feige and Spider-Man being in the MCU, they may want to rethink this hopeful looking future.

Either way, Sony is at fault here for not letting Marvel have even half of the earnings of the movie they made popular. Without the MCU, while Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would have been great, it would have been nowhere near where it is now. Hopefully Sony can come to an agreement with Marvel, which gives Marvel the earnings they want and gives Sony the rights to Kevin Feige and keeping Spider-Man in the MCU. These are two of the major points that give Spider-Man the popularity he has now.

There is an online petition that can be signed to #SaveSpider-Man and keep him in the MCU where he belongs.
